World Club Live Desk: 21–24 September 2026

WORLD CLUB / LIVE DESK
Monday 21 → Thursday 24 September 2026 · UK times

This week the map gets bigger. The Road World Championships turn Montréal into a circuit. A club from the Danish port town of Køge arrives in London to face Arsenal. The CONCACAF Nations League begins by moving national teams between islands and borrowed stadiums across the Caribbean. And in Chongqing, Palestine meet Aotearoa New Zealand in an international that carries considerably more geography with it than the fixture list suggests.

By Thursday night, you could follow international sport from China → Montréal → Portugal → Dominica → Jamaica → Dominican Republic → Costa Rica without leaving the screen.

KEY: ⭐ World Club priority · 🆓 free-to-watch · 💬 watch-together potential · 🎬 event/screening potential

Monday 21 September

13:50 — UCI Road World Championships: Women’s U23 Individual Time Trial
16:50 — Men’s U23 Individual Time Trial

Montréal, Québec · TNT Sports / HBO Max · ⭐⭐⭐⭐

Monday belongs to the next generation. The World Championships have moved into Montréal, and the U23 time trials provide an unusually literal version of the World Club idea: young riders representing nations rather than trade teams, racing through an actual city rather than inside a closed sporting venue.

The women’s course is 20.3km; the men’s is 31.3km. Both begin around Avenue du Parc, with Montréal rather than a purpose-built arena providing the backdrop. It also makes this useful 2030 research outside football: athletes at the point where junior promise starts becoming senior international identity.

Monday doesn’t need a token football match added for the sake of it. Montréal gets the day.

Tuesday 22 September

13:20 — UCI Road World Championships: Mixed Team Relay

Montréal · TNT Sports / HBO Max · ⭐⭐⭐⭐ 💬

One of cycling’s most unusual international events: men and women competing together for the same national team. The format alone makes it worth watching, but Montréal is becoming the real recurring character of this week’s Live Desk.

17:45 — Bayern Munich Women v Manchester City Women

Munich · UEFA Women’s Champions League · Disney+ · ⭐⭐⭐⭐ 💬

Manchester meets Munich in the opening round of the Women’s Champions League — two cities with enormous football identities, but women’s teams still negotiating their own relationships with those inherited club histories.

20:00 — Arsenal Women v HB Køge Women

London · UEFA Women’s Champions League · Disney+ · ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ 💬 🎬

This is the Tuesday lead. Before HB Køge become simply the Danish team Arsenal are playing, it is worth locating them. Køge is a small harbour and market town south of Copenhagen. Old streets, a medieval centre, Køge Marina, the harbour and the Baltic-facing geography make it almost comically different in scale from London.

I even checked the ten best things to do in Køge. This is the level of preparation World Club is now operating at.

HB Køge crest
HB Køge — a small Danish football place suddenly placed on the same European map as Arsenal and London.

And that’s precisely why the fixture works here. European competition temporarily puts a small Danish football place on the same map as Arsenal and London. Real Madrid–PSG and Juventus–Benfica give Tuesday much bigger names. Køge gives us the better World Club story.

Wednesday 23 September

20:00 — Chelsea Women v Austria Wien Women

Cherry Red Records Stadium, Wimbledon · UEFA Women’s Champions League · Disney+ · ⭐⭐⭐⭐ 💬

There’s a nice geographical wrinkle here too. Chelsea are playing European football in Wimbledon. That opens up the question of where a women’s team actually lives: the badge says Chelsea, the European fixture takes place elsewhere in south-west London, while the men’s stadium occupies another part of the club’s identity.

The Caribbean window opens

CONCACAF Nations League graphic
The CONCACAF Nations League opens another route through the Caribbean map.

20:00 — Turks & Caicos Islands v Montserrat
TCIFA National Academy, Providenciales · CONCACAF Nations League · ⭐⭐⭐ 🆓

21:00 — Bahamas v Saint Martin
Bethlehem Soccer Complex, St Croix, US Virgin Islands · ⭐⭐⭐⭐ 🆓

The second fixture is particularly World Club. Bahamas versus Saint Martin — played in the US Virgin Islands. Three Caribbean territories enter a single line of the fixture list.

00:00 — Aruba v Antigua & Barbuda
Sir Vivian Richards Stadium, St John’s, Antigua · ⭐⭐⭐⭐ 🆓

And look at the venue: a football international at a ground named after Sir Vivian Richards, one of the great figures of West Indian cricket. This is the first hint that something interesting is happening across Caribbean international football.

Thursday 24 September

10:30 — Palestine v Aotearoa New Zealand

Tongliang Long Stadium, Chongqing, China · ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

There are international friendlies whose interest lies almost entirely in the result. This isn’t one of them.

Palestine and Aotearoa New Zealand meet in Chongqing, thousands of miles from either home. New Zealand begin their first international window since the 2026 World Cup, starting another cycle with a mixture of established internationals and new players.

For Palestine, the context is different. Palestinian football has continued operating through extraordinary disruption. WAFA has reported on the effects of the war and Israeli military operations on Palestinian sporting infrastructure and player movement; those claims come from the Palestinian news agency and are presented as such.

The national team itself is increasingly assembled across borders, while the forthcoming Asian Cup gives this international window genuine sporting purpose. And then there is the simple geography: Palestine → Aotearoa New Zealand → Chongqing. Two national teams from opposite edges of Asia and the Pacific meeting on neutral ground in China.

There isn’t yet a confirmed UK broadcaster or stream that we can verify. Stay locked to our social media channels and Discord for any viewing updates.

13:50 — UCI Road World Championships: Women’s U23 Road Race

Montréal · TNT Sports / HBO Max · ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ 💬

The Worlds move from stopwatches to streets. Now the city becomes even more important: roads, gradients, neighbourhoods, spectators and Mount Royal itself determine the race.

18:20 — UCI Road World Championships: Junior Men’s Road Race

Montréal · TNT Sports / HBO Max · ⭐⭐⭐⭐

Another direct crossover with our 2030 idea: teenage athletes already representing countries on a global stage.

19:45 — Portugal v Wales

UEFA Nations League · BBC / S4C / BBC iPlayer / S4C Clic · ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ 🆓 💬 🎬

UEFA Nations League match ball
The UEFA Nations League returns this week, with Portugal v Wales available free-to-watch in the UK.

One of the easiest recommendations of the week. Portugal against Wales already gives us two very different football cultures. But Welsh-language national-team coverage on S4C adds another layer: language itself becomes part of how international football expresses national identity.

The Caribbean is getting louder

Something worth following is happening in Caribbean football. The expanded World Cup has increased the number of routes into international football’s biggest tournament. But expansion isn’t the whole explanation. Caribbean sides increasingly draw upon players moving between domestic leagues, European systems, North America and wider diasporas.

CONCACAF League A’s Group A brings together Costa Rica, Haiti, Trinidad & Tobago, Curaçao, Nicaragua and the Dominican Republic. Look further across the Nations League and the geography becomes even more interesting.

20:00 — Puerto Rico v Guyana
Windsor Park, Roseau, Dominica · CONCACAF Nations League · ⭐⭐⭐⭐ 🆓

Puerto Rico. Guyana. Playing in Dominica. Then the stadium stays open.

00:20 — Haiti v Trinidad & Tobago

Sabina Park, Kingston, Jamaica · ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ 🆓 💬 🎬

Haiti and Trinidad and Tobago pin badge
Haiti × Trinidad & Tobago — with Jamaica providing the ground beneath the fixture.

This might be the most World Club fixture of the entire week. Two of the Caribbean’s great football cultures meet — but Haiti’s nominal home game takes place in Kingston, Jamaica. And not just anywhere in Kingston: Sabina Park.

For generations the ground has been one of the great homes of West Indian cricket. Now it temporarily becomes Haiti’s football ground. That single stadium therefore connects Jamaican sporting history, West Indian cricket, Haitian displacement and contemporary Caribbean football.

The badge almost functions as the perfect little physical object for the story: Haiti × Trinidad, with Jamaica invisibly sitting behind both of them.

01:00 — Dominican Republic v Nicaragua
Estadio Cibao FC, Santiago · ⭐⭐⭐ 🆓

03:00 — Costa Rica v Curaçao

Estadio Ricardo Saprissa, San José · ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ 🆓 💬 🎬

For anyone still awake, this is the football pick. Costa Rica provide one of CONCACAF’s established international cultures and one of the region’s great football grounds. Curaçao represent something different: a small Caribbean island whose football identity also reaches across the Atlantic through its constitutional and historical relationship with the Netherlands and a player pool shaped by movement between Dutch and Caribbean football.

It’s another reminder that a national team isn’t necessarily contained by the borders on a map. There may be a bigger World Club story developing here: the Caribbean is beginning to make itself much harder to ignore in international football.

The World Club five

  1. Palestine v Aotearoa New Zealand — two distant football cultures meeting in Chongqing, with Palestine’s circumstances making the simple act of assembling a national team part of the story.
  2. Haiti v Trinidad & Tobago — two major Caribbean football cultures, Haiti playing “home” in Jamaica, and Sabina Park moving temporarily from West Indian cricket to international football.
  3. Arsenal Women v HB Køge Women — London meets a Danish harbour town that European competition suddenly places on the continental football map.
  4. Women’s U23 Road World Championship — Montréal isn’t merely hosting the sport; its streets and Mount Royal become the course.
  5. Portugal v Wales 🆓 — accessible international football with Welsh-language broadcasting placing language and national identity directly inside the viewing experience.

Watch together

MON Montréal U23 time trials · TUE Mixed Relay → Arsenal v HB Køge · WED Chelsea v Austria Wien → CONCACAF Caribbean opening night · THU Palestine v New Zealand → Montréal U23 Women → Portugal v Wales 🆓 → Puerto Rico v Guyana → Haiti v Trinidad & Tobago → Costa Rica v Curaçao

Nobody is expected to watch the whole thing. But that Thursday sequence is almost a statement of what the Live Desk is supposed to be: Chongqing → Montréal → Portugal → Roseau → Kingston → Santiago → San José. One day of sport, and a map of the world.

WORLD CLUB / LIVE DESK 004

28–30 AUGUST 2026

Live sport. Real places. True culture.

This weekend moves through Munich, South London, La Boca, Liverpool, Dortmund, Seville, Rio de Janeiro, Alicante, Aberdeen, Sunderland, Queens, Derry, Madrid and São Paulo.

Not everything that’s on. Just the sport worth watching for what it tells us about place, identity, culture and belonging.

FRI

28 AUGUST

19:30 FREE

Bayern Munich v Stuttgart

Bundesliga · Allianz Arena, Munich
BBC iPlayer / BBC Sport

The Bundesliga is back — and so is free Bundesliga football on Friday nights on the BBC.

Champions Bayern open at the Allianz with some new faces to look out for. Nathaniel Brown and Ismaël Saibari are among the summer arrivals in Munich, while Stuttgart begin another season trying to disrupt the established order.

The first Friday night of the Bundesliga feels like a good place to start the weekend.

Trefelin BGC v Ammanford

Welsh football
BBC iPlayer

We’ll admit it: neither of these clubs was particularly on our radar.

But that might be precisely why it’s worth dropping in.

While Bayern and Stuttgart play in front of the world in Munich, two Welsh clubs we rarely get the opportunity to watch are being put in front of a national audience by the BBC.

Sometimes the Live Desk is about knowing exactly why you want to watch something. Sometimes it’s about turning on a match from somewhere unfamiliar and seeing what you find.

20:00

Crystal Palace v Manchester City

Premier League · Selhurst Park, South London
Sky Sports

There aren’t many Premier League grounds quite like Selhurst Park.

Intimate, loud and capable of producing a genuine cacophony of sound, it’s home to one of the league’s most outspoken supporter cultures.

There are two new stories arriving in South London with City.

Marc Guéhi returns to the ground where he was once Palace captain, while we may also get our first look at Ayyoub Bouaddi, City’s new 18-year-old Moroccan midfielder and the most expensive teenage signing in Premier League history.

Will the £86m teenager make his Premier League debut at Selhurst Park?

01:30 SAT UK

Boca Juniors v Lanús

Argentina · La Bombonera, Buenos Aires
Fanatiz / Premier Sports 1

Friday night in Buenos Aires. Early Saturday morning over here.

Lanús have made the better start to the season and sit above Boca after six games. Boca, meanwhile, return to La Bombonera after another period playing away from home.

Then there’s the setting itself: one of football’s great bowls of noise rising out of the streets of La Boca.

SAT

29 AUGUST

12:30

Liverpool v Nottingham Forest

Premier League · Anfield
TNT Sports

Liverpool return to Anfield for the first time this season.

Sometimes that’s enough of a reason to watch.

After the summer reset, this is the first chance to see what the new season actually looks and sounds like at home.

17:30 WORLD CLUB FIVE

Borussia Dortmund v Hamburg

Bundesliga · Westfalenstadion, Dortmund
Sky Sports Football

Borussia Dortmund supporters filling the Yellow Wall in Dortmund.
The Yellow Wall, Dortmund.

Hamburg are back in the Bundesliga.

And one of their early stops is Dortmund.

Two enormous football cities meet in front of the Yellow Wall, with Hamburg supporters once again following their team around the top division after years away.

Dortmund’s south stand is one of football’s defining pieces of supporter architecture: a vast wall of people, sound and yellow that has become almost as recognisable as the club itself.

Can the Yellow Wall push Dortmund to an early home win against one of German football’s great returning names?

20:30

Sevilla v Atlético Madrid

La Liga · Ramón Sánchez-Pizjuán, Seville
UK coverage TBC

Saturday night in Seville.

The Sánchez-Pizjuán under the lights. Atlético in town.

Sometimes that’s enough.

01:20 SUN UK

Vasco da Gama v Cruzeiro

Brasileirão · São Januário, Rio de Janeiro
UK coverage TBC

Saturday night continues into Sunday morning at São Januário.

Vasco need league points. They enter the weekend near the bottom of the Brasileirão, but return home having beaten Vitória there in the Copa do Brasil despite playing most of the match with ten men.

And then there’s the ground.

Opened in 1927, São Januário belongs on any World Club map of significant football stadiums. Built by Vasco and its supporters, its history intersects with some of the larger stories surrounding race, class and social mobility in Brazilian football.

The stadium even predates the Maracanã by more than two decades.

Saturday night in Rio, Sunday morning in London.

12:00 WORLD CLUB FIVE

Aberdeen v Rangers

Scottish Premiership · Pittodrie
Sky Sports

Pittodrie Stadium, home of Aberdeen Football Club.
Pittodrie, Aberdeen.

An under-pressure Rangers travel north to Pittodrie.

Part of what gives this fixture its edge is geography. Aberdeen sit outside Scottish football’s central-belt axis, with Pittodrie one of the furthest major league grounds from Glasgow and Edinburgh.

It’s a proper away day in a league where so much of the gravitational pull sits around the central belt.

The distance matters. So does the history between the clubs.

13:00 FREE

Celtic Women v Hibernian Women

SWPL
BBC iPlayer / BBC Sport

A free Sunday-afternoon window into the Scottish Women’s Premier League, and an easy opportunity to drop into the domestic women’s game north of the border.

14:00

Sunderland v Fulham

Premier League · Stadium of Light
Sky Sports

Sunderland remain one of those clubs that seem to embody the spirit of their city.

The shirts. The accents. The enormous stadium beside the Wear. The feeling that what happens to the football club matters well beyond football.

This weekend the team from the Stadium of Light meet the team from the Cottage.

Two very different relationships between a football club and its home.

New York meets Marvel at the US Open.

Coming from Queens, New York: arguably tennis’s most showbiz Grand Slam.

Celebrity spotting. New York crowds. Late-night matches. On-court fashion. And DJs playing inside Arthur Ashe Stadium during changeovers, giving the tournament a soundtrack quite unlike the other Grand Slams.

The music starts before the tournament proper, too. US Open Fan Week culminates with its Friday-night Block Party, built around DJs and live music.

And this year there’s something else to spot.

The US Open has collaborated with Marvel on a new Spider-Man comic, sending him through New York’s five boroughs on his way to Flushing Meadows as part of the tournament’s Celebrating Our New York Story theme.

Six collectible covers have been created, including borough-themed editions.

Celebrities, courtside DJs, tennis fashion and Spider-Man. Welcome to Queens.

16:00 FREE

Derry City v Shamrock Rovers

League of Ireland Premier Division · Brandywell
BBC iPlayer / BBC Sport

One of the weekend’s more interesting pieces of football geography.

Derry City are based in Northern Ireland but play in the Republic of Ireland’s league system — a sporting arrangement inseparable from the history and geography of the city itself.

They’re the only Northern Irish club currently playing in the League of Ireland Premier Division.

Shamrock Rovers arrive from a very different kind of journey. Their European campaign ended on Thursday night, leaving them only a few days to reset before heading north to the Brandywell.

From Europe back to the league. From Dublin across the border to Derry.

16:00

Real Madrid v Málaga

La Liga · Santiago Bernabéu, Madrid
Premier Sports 1

Málaga are back in La Liga.

And very early in their return comes a trip to the Bernabéu.

Promotion doesn’t only mean moving up a table. It restores fixtures, journeys and occasions to a city that hasn’t experienced them for years.

For Málaga, this is one of them.
