The South Coast derby is this weekend’s strongest free football anchor: two port cities, neighbouring identities and a rivalry carried through generations. Southampton arrive fresh from the Spygate ruling: manager Tonda Eckert received a suspended six-week ban and a £28,000 fine for authorising observation of opponents’ training sessions. He remains available on the touchline for the derby. Read the background to the ruling. 💬

WORLD CLUB / LIVE DESK
Monday 5 → Thursday 8 October 2026 · UK times

Belfast. The Caribbean. Wales. London and Glasgow. Argentina. Shanghai. Cleveland and Chicago. Then, late on Thursday night, Santos.

This week moves between international football, youth pathways, tennis in China and the American postseason before ending with two of Brazil’s great football identities at Vila Belmiro.

Monday 5 October — Belfast → Caribbean

19:45 — Northern Ireland v Georgia

Windsor Park, Belfast · BBC One NI / BBC Three / BBC iPlayer / BBC Sport · ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ 🆓 💬 🎬

Windsor Park, Belfast
Windsor Park, Belfast.

Monday begins in Belfast. Windsor Park is compact enough for international football to feel embedded in the city rather than detached from it, and Northern Ireland’s home support gives the evening a distinct visual and vocal identity.

Georgia arrive from a very different football culture, one whose profile has risen sharply in recent years. It makes this more than a qualifier: two relatively small football nations, each with a strong sense of national belonging around the team, meeting in Belfast.

23:00 — Martinique v El Salvador

CONCACAF Nations League · CONCACAF YouTube · ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ 🆓 💬

Late Monday takes the desk into the Caribbean. Martinique against El Salvador connects a French Caribbean island with Central America through CONCACAF — exactly the kind of regional international football that becomes visible when an official stream opens it to viewers elsewhere.

Tuesday 6 October — Wales → London / Glasgow

17:30 — Wales U21 v Austria U21

Wales · BBC iPlayer / S4C Online · ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ 🆓

The senior international window usually dominates attention, but the U21 game offers another view: the pathway beneath it. Wales’ next generation meets Austria with Welsh-language coverage providing a second layer of national identity around the match.

19:45 — England v Czechia

Wembley, London · ITV1 / ITVX / STV · ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ 🆓 💬 🎬

Wembley supplies one version of international football on Tuesday night: huge scale, travelling support and the rituals of an England home game in London.

19:45 — Scotland v Slovenia

Hampden Park, Glasgow · BBC Two / BBC Scotland / BBC iPlayer · ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ 🆓 💬

At exactly the same time, Hampden offers another. Glasgow, Scotland’s travelling and home support and one of international football’s historic grounds make this a genuine split-screen evening rather than simply a choice between two fixtures.

Wednesday 7 October — Argentina → Shanghai → America

00:00 — Argentina v Benin

International friendly · Premier Sports 2 · ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Wednesday starts with an unusual international connection: Argentina and Benin. South America meets West Africa in a fixture that immediately pushes the week beyond the familiar European international map.

The Argentina fixture carries an additional layer through Lionel Messi. The shirt associated with his final Argentina appearance turns the game into an object story as well as a sporting one: a national jersey becoming a marker of the closing stage of one of football’s defining international careers.

05:00 → — Shanghai Masters

Qizhong Forest Sports City Arena, Shanghai · Sky Sports Tennis / Sky Sports Main Event / Sky Sports+ · ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Qizhong Forest Sports City Arena, Shanghai
Qizhong Forest Sports City Arena, Shanghai.

The morning belongs to Shanghai. The Qizhong Forest Sports City Arena — with its distinctive retractable roof — gives the Masters one of the tour’s most recognisable settings and places the Asian tennis swing firmly inside the city rather than treating it as simply another tournament on the calendar.

Chinese players on home courts sit alongside the tour’s global names, turning the tournament into a meeting between international tennis and a local audience that has become an increasingly important part of the sport’s autumn calendar.

Across the Atlantic — the American postseason

Olivia Miles
Olivia Miles — 2026 WNBA Rookie of the Year.

The WNBA postseason arrives with a new name firmly established. Olivia Miles has just been named the 2026 WNBA Rookie of the Year unanimously after a debut season that immediately placed her among the league’s most important young players.

WNBA basketball

The playoff map itself is part of the story: New York and Atlanta, then Las Vegas and Golden State. The Valkyries are still one of the league’s newest sporting identities, giving the Bay Area another women’s professional team around which a supporter culture is being built.

MLB postseason
October baseball: the MLB postseason moves between American cities.

Baseball is moving through its own postseason geography at the same time. Cleveland and Chicago provide the strongest midweek thread, with October baseball turning ballparks and cities into something quite different from the regular season.

Cleveland Guardians

Thursday 8 October — Scotland → Dublin → Brazil

19:00 — Scotland Women U23 v Germany Women U23

Women’s youth international · DFB Play · ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ 🆓

Another pathway game rather than another senior international. Scotland and Germany’s U23 women offer a chance to see the players sitting between youth football and the senior national sides — the point where development has to become opportunity.

20:00 — Shamrock Rovers v Drogheda United

Dublin · LOITV · ⭐⭐⭐⭐

Dublin keeps club football in the evening before the day crosses the Atlantic. The League of Ireland offers a much more local scale than the giant European leagues surrounding the international break.

23:30 — Santos v Flamengo

Vila Belmiro, Santos · Premier Sports 2 · ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ 💬 🎬

Neymar at Santos
Santos are hoping Neymar can return after his injury lay-off.

Thursday ends at Vila Belmiro. Santos against Flamengo already carries two enormous but very different Brazilian football identities: the historic port-city club against Rio’s mass-supported giant.

There may be another reason to stay up. Neymar has been working back from the thigh injury that has kept him out since September, with Santos targeting this game as a possible return. If he is cleared, we may get at least a glimpse of him back in a Santos shirt at Vila Belmiro.

The possibility adds another layer to a fixture already loaded with history. Neymar returning at the club where his story began, against Flamengo, would turn the final stop of the week into something more than a late-night league game.

The World Club Five

  1. Northern Ireland v Georgia — Belfast, Windsor Park and two distinctive national football cultures, free to watch.
  2. Wales U21 v Austria U21 — the development pathway with Welsh-language broadcasting alongside it.
  3. Shanghai Masters — tennis, Shanghai and one of the tour’s most distinctive pieces of stadium architecture.
  4. The American postseason — Olivia Miles, the WNBA playoffs and October baseball moving between sporting cities.
  5. Santos v Flamengo — Vila Belmiro, two Brazilian football identities and the possibility of Neymar’s return.

WORLD CLUB / LIVE DESK
Monday 28 September → Thursday 1 October 2026 · UK times

This week starts in Japan. The Asian Games spread across Aichi and Nagoya, Japan’s national football team moves through Hiroshima and Yokohama, and the tennis tour takes us to Beijing. From there the sporting day travels west through Prague, Glasgow, Paris, Gothenburg, Rome and Lyon before Thursday closes in Køge, Cardiff and Manchester.

KEY: ⭐ World Club priority · 🆓 free-to-watch · 💬 watch-together potential · 🎬 event/screening potential

Monday 28 September

Aichi–Nagoya Asian Games

From late night / early morning UK · Aichi & Nagoya, Japan · ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games
The Asian Games spread the sporting week across Aichi Prefecture and Nagoya.

The Asian Games give Monday its centre of gravity. Athletes from across Asia compete across a huge programme moving between athletics, surfing, cricket, sepak takraw, beach volleyball, badminton, shooting, baseball/softball and hockey.

The scale is part of the attraction. Rather than a single stadium or city, the Games open a route through Aichi Prefecture and Nagoya — and through sporting cultures that rarely occupy the centre of a British television schedule.

08:00 — Japan v South Korea: Men’s Hockey

Aichi–Nagoya Asian Games · ⭐⭐⭐⭐

A familiar regional rivalry appears in a sport we encounter much less often. Japan against South Korea at a home Asian Games gives the morning an immediate sense of regional sporting identity.

11:25 — Japan v Venezuela

Edion Peace Wing Hiroshima, Hiroshima · Nippon TV / TVer / DAZN Japan · UK availability TBC · ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Edion Peace Wing Hiroshima
Edion Peace Wing brings Japan’s national team into the centre of Hiroshima.

Japan’s international window begins in Hiroshima rather than Tokyo. Edion Peace Wing sits in the centre of the city and gives the national team a very different setting from the giant metropolitan stadiums more commonly associated with Japanese internationals.

The ground is part of the story: national football arriving in a regional city, inside one of Japan’s most interesting new football venues.

18:00 — World Grand Prix Darts

Mattioli Arena, Leicester · Sky Sports · ⭐⭐⭐

The World Grand Prix brings a different kind of sporting culture into Monday evening: arena atmosphere, communal watching and the tournament’s distinctive double-in, double-out format.

19:45 — Northern Ireland v Hungary

Belfast · BBC · ⭐⭐⭐⭐ 🆓 💬

Belfast takes over the evening. International football, Windsor Park and Northern Irish supporter culture make the setting as important as the fixture itself.

Tuesday 29 September

Aichi–Nagoya Asian Games

From 00:00 UK · Aichi & Nagoya · ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games

Badminton reaches its men’s, women’s and mixed finals; women’s football reaches the semi-finals; sport climbing and tennis continue; and the athletics programme delivers another run of finals. Sepak takraw, canoe slalom and padel widen the picture further.

Asian tennis swing

Morning UK · Sky Sports Tennis / Sky Sports+ · ⭐⭐⭐⭐

The Asian swing occupies the morning before European football takes over later in the day. Tournament, venue and city matter here alongside the individual match-ups.

19:45 — Scotland v Switzerland

Glasgow · BBC · ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ 🆓 💬

Hampden and Glasgow give Tuesday evening one of its strongest places: international football inside a stadium inseparable from Scottish football history.

19:45 — Czechia v England

Prague · ITV1 / ITVX · ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ 🆓 💬 🎬

Czechia and England supporters

An England away international means movement: travelling supporters, another capital, another stadium and another national football culture. Prague rather than England is the route into this one.

Wednesday 30 September

Aichi–Nagoya Asian Games

From late Tuesday / throughout Wednesday morning UK · ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Golf, archery, beach volleyball, hockey, sport climbing, tennis, diving, track cycling, canoe slalom, wrestling and judo stretch across the Japanese day. The men’s football semi-finals begin at 06:00 UK.

China Open

Morning → afternoon UK · National Tennis Center, Beijing · Sky Sports Tennis / Sky Sports+ · ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

National Tennis Center Beijing
Beijing’s National Tennis Center gives the Asian swing one of its most distinctive settings.

Beijing becomes the next coordinate. The ATP and WTA tours share the China National Tennis Center, with Diamond Court providing one of the most recognisable pieces of tennis architecture on the Asian swing.

Diamond Court at the China Open

The players give the place its contemporary identity too. Jannik Sinner and Coco Gauff are among the faces that make Beijing a major stop rather than simply a bridge between the Grand Slams and the end of the season.

Through the morning, the day belongs to Beijing. By late afternoon it has moved into European football.

17:45 — Paris FC Women v Arsenal Women

Stade Jean Bouin, Paris · UEFA Women’s Champions League · Disney+ · ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ 💬

Paris FC and Paris Saint-Germain
Paris FC and PSG represent two different routes through football in the French capital.

Paris FC are not simply Paris Saint-Germain’s smaller neighbour. Their histories actually intersect. Paris FC were founded in 1969 and briefly merged with Stade Saint-Germanois in 1970 to form Paris Saint-Germain. The union lasted only two seasons; in 1972 the clubs separated again, with Paris FC initially retaining the top-flight place and the Parc des Princes.

Paris FC crest

The paths since then could hardly look more different. PSG became the globally recognised Parisian superclub; Paris FC spent long periods rebuilding through the lower divisions and developing roots of their own. The women’s side has become particularly significant: it reached the Champions League group stage in 2023 after eliminating Arsenal and Wolfsburg, and in 2025 won the Coupe de France against PSG. In May 2026, Paris FC also beat PSG to reach the French championship final for the first time.

So Arsenal are not merely travelling to “the other club in Paris”. They are returning to face a club that has already knocked them out of Europe, inside a Parisian football identity with its own complicated connection to PSG. That makes this one of the week’s strongest World Club fixtures.

17:45 — Häcken Women v Juventus Women

Gothenburg · Disney+ · ⭐⭐⭐⭐

Swedish women’s football meets one of Italy’s biggest sporting institutions, adding Gothenburg to the European map.

17:45 — Roma Women v Barcelona Women

Rome · Disney+ · ⭐⭐⭐⭐

Rome and Barcelona: two cities whose identities extend far beyond their clubs, meeting through women’s European football.

20:00 — OL Lyonnes v Chelsea Women

Lyon · Disney+ · ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ 💬 🎬

Few places have been as important to the development of elite European women’s club football as Lyon. Chelsea travelling there makes this one of Wednesday’s essential stops.

Thursday 1 October

Aichi–Nagoya Asian Games

From late Wednesday / throughout Thursday morning UK · ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Cricket, beach volleyball, hockey, rugby sevens, softball, tennis, rhythmic gymnastics, track cycling, canoe slalom, squash, wrestling and judo carry the Games into another Japanese morning. Asian Games tennis reaches the men’s singles quarter-finals and women’s singles semi-finals.

07:10 — Panama v New Zealand

International Stadium Yokohama · Japanese coverage / UK availability TBC · ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Panama against Aotearoa New Zealand, played in Japan, creates a trans-Pacific international before Britain has properly started its day. It also opens a Yokohama double-header.

11:10 — Japan v Ecuador

International Stadium Yokohama · Japanese coverage / UK availability TBC · ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ 💬

International Stadium Yokohama
Yokohama’s stadium carries its own World Cup memory into Thursday’s international double-header.

Asia meets South America in Yokohama, at the stadium that staged the 2002 World Cup final. The venue connects the contemporary Japan team to one of the defining moments in the country’s modern football history.

17:45 — HB Køge Women v Servette Women

Køge · Disney+ · ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

After HB Køge travelled to Arsenal last week, the route now leads back to the Danish harbour town. European competition is most interesting when it lets us keep following smaller football places after the famous opponent has gone.

19:45 — Wales v Norway

Cardiff · BBC / S4C / BBC iPlayer / S4C Clic · ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ 🆓 💬 🎬

Cardiff brings together two particularly recognisable international supporter cultures. Wales have the Red Wall, the mass of red that has become part of the visual identity of the national team at home and abroad. Norway arrive with a newer ritual that became one of the images of the 2026 World Cup: the Viking Row.

Norwegian supporters sit or crouch in lines, lean together and mime rowing an invisible longship while the chant builds around “Ro! Ro! Ro!” — “row” in Norwegian. During the World Cup it travelled with the supporters into streets, stations and public squares as well as stadiums.

So before Wales and Norway meet on the pitch, two supporter traditions meet around it: the Red Wall and the Viking Row. Add S4C’s Welsh-language coverage and this becomes as much about how a national team is followed — visually, collectively and linguistically — as the football itself.

20:00 — Manchester City Women v Real Madrid Women

Manchester · Disney+ · ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ 💬 🎬

Manchester closes the European portion of the desk with another major women’s Champions League meeting — two globally recognisable club identities encountered through the women’s game.

The World Club five

  1. Aichi–Nagoya Asian Games — a whole sporting ecosystem spread across Japan, with a programme reaching far beyond the sports most visible on British television.
  2. China Open — Beijing, Sinner, Gauff and one of the Asian swing’s most distinctive tennis settings.
  3. Paris FC Women v Arsenal Women — Arsenal return to face a club with its own Parisian identity, a shared origin story with PSG and recent European history against Arsenal themselves.
  4. Wales v Norway — the Red Wall meets the Viking Row, with Welsh-language broadcasting adding another expression of national identity.
  5. Japan v Ecuador — Asia meets South America in Yokohama, inside a stadium embedded in World Cup history.

Watch together

MON Aichi–Nagoya → Hiroshima → Belfast · TUE Japan → Glasgow / Prague · WED Aichi–Nagoya → Beijing → Paris → Gothenburg / Rome → Lyon · THU Aichi–Nagoya → Yokohama → Køge → Cardiff / Manchester

Nobody is expected to watch the whole thing. Follow the clock and a different picture of the sporting week appears: Japan → China → Europe, with cities, stadiums, players and supporter cultures changing as the day moves west.

  • UCI Road World Championships — Montréal — the city becomes the sporting architecture, with youth, women’s and men’s elite racing all contributing to the story.
  • England v Spain — Wembley — international identity, a giant civic stadium and genuinely mass free-to-air reach.
  • WXV Saturday — Twickenham, Cardiff and Edinburgh form a superb three-city women’s-sport sequence.
  • Liverpool Women v Everton Women — the Merseyside derby translated through the women’s game.
  • Chelsea Women v Arsenal Women — elite women’s football and London sporting geography in the weekend’s major WSL contest.

World Club event potential

The strongest Discord watch-party windows are England–Spain, Chelsea–Arsenal and the Montréal men’s road race. The strongest Secret Cinema-style / physical World Club references are Montréal — mapping a city into a course — and the WXV three-city Saturday, where place, national identity, supporter culture and women’s sport already create most of the raw material an event concept would need.

World Club Live Desk: 21–24 September 2026

WORLD CLUB / LIVE DESK
Monday 21 → Thursday 24 September 2026 · UK times

This week the map gets bigger. The Road World Championships turn Montréal into a circuit. A club from the Danish port town of Køge arrives in London to face Arsenal. The CONCACAF Nations League begins by moving national teams between islands and borrowed stadiums across the Caribbean. And in Chongqing, Palestine meet Aotearoa New Zealand in an international that carries considerably more geography with it than the fixture list suggests.

By Thursday night, you could follow international sport from China → Montréal → Portugal → Dominica → Jamaica → Dominican Republic → Costa Rica without leaving the screen.

Monday 21 September

13:50 — UCI Road World Championships: Women’s U23 Individual Time Trial
16:50 — Men’s U23 Individual Time Trial

Montréal, Québec · TNT Sports / HBO Max · ⭐⭐⭐⭐

Monday belongs to the next generation. The World Championships have moved into Montréal, and the U23 time trials provide an unusually literal version of the World Club idea: young riders representing nations rather than trade teams, racing through an actual city rather than inside a closed sporting venue.

The women’s course is 20.3km; the men’s is 31.3km. Both begin around Avenue du Parc, with Montréal rather than a purpose-built arena providing the backdrop. It also makes this useful 2030 research outside football: athletes at the point where junior promise starts becoming senior international identity.

Monday doesn’t need a token football match added for the sake of it. Montréal gets the day.

Tuesday 22 September

13:20 — UCI Road World Championships: Mixed Team Relay

Montréal · TNT Sports / HBO Max · ⭐⭐⭐⭐ 💬

One of cycling’s most unusual international events: men and women competing together for the same national team. The format alone makes it worth watching, but Montréal is becoming the real recurring character of this week’s Live Desk.

17:45 — Bayern Munich Women v Manchester City Women

Munich · UEFA Women’s Champions League · Disney+ · ⭐⭐⭐⭐ 💬

Manchester meets Munich in the opening round of the Women’s Champions League — two cities with enormous football identities, but women’s teams still negotiating their own relationships with those inherited club histories.

20:00 — Arsenal Women v HB Køge Women

London · UEFA Women’s Champions League · Disney+ · ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ 💬 🎬

This is the Tuesday lead. Before HB Køge become simply the Danish team Arsenal are playing, it is worth locating them. Køge is a small harbour and market town south of Copenhagen. Old streets, a medieval centre, Køge Marina, the harbour and the Baltic-facing geography make it almost comically different in scale from London.

I even checked the ten best things to do in Køge. This is the level of preparation World Club is now operating at.

HB Køge crest
HB Køge — a small Danish football place suddenly placed on the same European map as Arsenal and London.

And that’s precisely why the fixture works here. European competition temporarily puts a small Danish football place on the same map as Arsenal and London. Real Madrid–PSG and Juventus–Benfica give Tuesday much bigger names. Køge gives us the better World Club story.

Wednesday 23 September

20:00 — Chelsea Women v Austria Wien Women

Cherry Red Records Stadium, Wimbledon · UEFA Women’s Champions League · Disney+ · ⭐⭐⭐⭐ 💬

There’s a nice geographical wrinkle here too. Chelsea are playing European football in Wimbledon. That opens up the question of where a women’s team actually lives: the badge says Chelsea, the European fixture takes place elsewhere in south-west London, while the men’s stadium occupies another part of the club’s identity.

The Caribbean window opens

The second fixture is particularly World Club. Bahamas versus Saint Martin — played in the US Virgin Islands. Three Caribbean territories enter a single line of the fixture list.

00:00 — Aruba v Antigua & Barbuda
Sir Vivian Richards Stadium, St John’s, Antigua · ⭐⭐⭐⭐ 🆓

And look at the venue: a football international at a ground named after Sir Vivian Richards, one of the great figures of West Indian cricket. This is the first hint that something interesting is happening across Caribbean international football.

Thursday 24 September

10:30 — Palestine v Aotearoa New Zealand

Tongliang Long Stadium, Chongqing, China · ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

There are international friendlies whose interest lies almost entirely in the result. This isn’t one of them.

Palestine and Aotearoa New Zealand meet in Chongqing, thousands of miles from either home. New Zealand begin their first international window since the 2026 World Cup, starting another cycle with a mixture of established internationals and new players.

For Palestine, the context is different. Palestinian football has continued operating through extraordinary disruption. WAFA has reported on the effects of the war and Israeli military operations on Palestinian sporting infrastructure and player movement; those claims come from the Palestinian news agency and are presented as such.

The national team itself is increasingly assembled across borders, while the forthcoming Asian Cup gives this international window genuine sporting purpose. And then there is the simple geography: Palestine → Aotearoa New Zealand → Chongqing. Two national teams from opposite edges of Asia and the Pacific meeting on neutral ground in China.

There isn’t yet a confirmed UK broadcaster or stream that we can verify. Stay locked to our social media channels and Discord for any viewing updates.

13:50 — UCI Road World Championships: Women’s U23 Road Race

Montréal · TNT Sports / HBO Max · ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ 💬

The Worlds move from stopwatches to streets. Now the city becomes even more important: roads, gradients, neighbourhoods, spectators and Mount Royal itself determine the race.

18:20 — UCI Road World Championships: Junior Men’s Road Race

Montréal · TNT Sports / HBO Max · ⭐⭐⭐⭐

Another direct crossover with our 2030 idea: teenage athletes already representing countries on a global stage.

19:45 — Portugal v Wales

UEFA Nations League · BBC / S4C / BBC iPlayer / S4C Clic · ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ 🆓 💬 🎬

UEFA Nations League match ball
The UEFA Nations League returns this week, with Portugal v Wales available free-to-watch in the UK.

One of the easiest recommendations of the week. Portugal against Wales already gives us two very different football cultures. But Welsh-language national-team coverage on S4C adds another layer: language itself becomes part of how international football expresses national identity.

The Caribbean is getting louder

Something worth following is happening in Caribbean football. The expanded World Cup has increased the number of routes into international football’s biggest tournament. But expansion isn’t the whole explanation. Caribbean sides increasingly draw upon players moving between domestic leagues, European systems, North America and wider diasporas.

CONCACAF League A’s Group A brings together Costa Rica, Haiti, Trinidad & Tobago, Curaçao, Nicaragua and the Dominican Republic. Look further across the Nations League and the geography becomes even more interesting.

20:00 — Puerto Rico v Guyana
Windsor Park, Roseau, Dominica · CONCACAF Nations League · ⭐⭐⭐⭐ 🆓

Puerto Rico. Guyana. Playing in Dominica. Then the stadium stays open.

00:20 — Haiti v Trinidad & Tobago

Sabina Park, Kingston, Jamaica · ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ 🆓 💬 🎬

Haiti and Trinidad and Tobago pin badge
Haiti × Trinidad & Tobago — with Jamaica providing the ground beneath the fixture.

This might be the most World Club fixture of the entire week. Two of the Caribbean’s great football cultures meet — but Haiti’s nominal home game takes place in Kingston, Jamaica. And not just anywhere in Kingston: Sabina Park.

For generations the ground has been one of the great homes of West Indian cricket. Now it temporarily becomes Haiti’s football ground. That single stadium therefore connects Jamaican sporting history, West Indian cricket, Haitian displacement and contemporary Caribbean football.

The badge almost functions as the perfect little physical object for the story: Haiti × Trinidad, with Jamaica invisibly sitting behind both of them.

01:00 — Dominican Republic v Nicaragua
Estadio Cibao FC, Santiago · ⭐⭐⭐ 🆓

03:00 — Costa Rica v Curaçao

Estadio Ricardo Saprissa, San José · ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ 🆓 💬 🎬

For anyone still awake, this is the football pick. Costa Rica provide one of CONCACAF’s established international cultures and one of the region’s great football grounds. Curaçao represent something different: a small Caribbean island whose football identity also reaches across the Atlantic through its constitutional and historical relationship with the Netherlands and a player pool shaped by movement between Dutch and Caribbean football.

It’s another reminder that a national team isn’t necessarily contained by the borders on a map. There may be a bigger World Club story developing here: the Caribbean is beginning to make itself much harder to ignore in international football.

The World Club five

  1. Palestine v Aotearoa New Zealand — two distant football cultures meeting in Chongqing, with Palestine’s circumstances making the simple act of assembling a national team part of the story.
  2. Haiti v Trinidad & Tobago — two major Caribbean football cultures, Haiti playing “home” in Jamaica, and Sabina Park moving temporarily from West Indian cricket to international football.
  3. Arsenal Women v HB Køge Women — London meets a Danish harbour town that European competition suddenly places on the continental football map.
  4. Women’s U23 Road World Championship — Montréal isn’t merely hosting the sport; its streets and Mount Royal become the course.
  5. Portugal v Wales 🆓 — accessible international football with Welsh-language broadcasting placing language and national identity directly inside the viewing experience.

WORLD CLUB / LIVE DESK
Monday 14 → Thursday 17 September 2026 · UK times

This week belongs to football in places where the relationship between club and community is impossible to ignore: Sunderland returning to Europe after 53 years, AFC Wimbledon meeting MK Dons in a fixture born from one of English football’s great arguments about ownership and belonging, and European nights linking Istanbul with Marseille, Glasgow with Budapest, south London with Poznań and Nicosia with Galicia. Alongside it, the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup reaches its knockout phase in Poland while an argument grows over whether the tournament is being given the space in the calendar that it deserves.

Monday 14 September

20:00 — Leeds United v Newcastle United
Elland Road · Sky Sports Main Event / Premier League · ⭐⭐⭐ 💬

Monday’s centrepiece is almost entirely about place. Leeds and Newcastle are two clubs whose identities remain unusually bound to their cities, with huge supporter cultures and Elland Road providing the sort of dense urban football setting the Live Desk is designed to notice.

Tuesday 15 September

19:45 — West Ham United v Fulham
London Stadium · Sky Sports+ · ⭐⭐⭐

East London against west London, but also two very different relationships between club and ground. The London Stadium remains part of the West Ham story rather than merely its setting.

20:00 — Ipswich Town v Arsenal
Portman Road · Sky Sports+ · ⭐⭐⭐

Portman Road hosting Arsenal gives the night an East Anglian counterweight to London: cup football carrying the champions outside the usual elite-stadium circuit.

20:00 — Liverpool v Tottenham Hotspur
Anfield · ITV4 / ITVX + Sky Sports · ⭐⭐⭐ 🆓 💬 🎬

The most accessible major watch of Tuesday. Anfield, Liverpool–London, cup-night ritual and, importantly, a genuinely free-to-watch national broadcast.

The official match ball for the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup Poland 2026.

The tournament remains one of the strongest World Club windows into youth pathways, emerging national teams and the geography of women’s football. But this week the calendar itself has become part of the story. Alex Morgan, Crystal Dunn, Marta, Lindsey Heaps, U.S. youth captain Kennedy Fuller and other players have backed an open letter asking FIFA to put the U-20 Women’s World Cup into the international match calendar. The issue is practical as much as symbolic: without that protection, clubs and universities are not necessarily required to release eligible players, leaving a World Cup competing directly with domestic seasons for its own players.

It raises a useful World Club question about what a competition’s status means in practice. A youth World Cup can be presented as a major global pathway, but that pathway is weakened if the calendar forces young players to choose between representing their country and keeping their place with a club or university.

17:45 — Ararat-Armenia v Sparta Prague
Yerevan · TNT Sports / HBO Max · ⭐⭐⭐

Yerevan → Prague. A European football route that immediately expands the usual western-European map.

Cyprus meets Galicia: island identity against one of Spain’s most distinctive regional football cultures.

53 years later: Sunderland in Europe

20:00 — Sunderland v AZ Alkmaar
Stadium of Light · TNT Sports / HBO Max · ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ 💬 🎬

A Sunderland supporter marks the club’s return to European competition.

Sunderland were the great surprise of last season’s Premier League, finishing seventh after promotion and qualifying for Europe. Now the Black Cats are about to play their first European match since 1973: a 53-year gap.

That makes this more than a Europa League opener. Sunderland’s support remained enormous through relegation, League One and the long route back, and European football arriving at the Stadium of Light feels like a reward for a football city that never stopped behaving like one. The opposition adds another layer: AZ arrive from Alkmaar in North Holland, a smaller city with an excellent academy and its own strong local identity.

The old photographs of Sunderland’s previous European adventure make the distance tangible. This is not a European return measured in managerial cycles. It spans generations of supporters.

20:00 — AC Milan v Benfica

Four more knockout matches and another chance to follow the tournament through its Polish host cities rather than treating it as an abstract television competition.

17:45 — OFI Crete v Hoffenheim

Crete → Baden-Württemberg. Island football against one of Germany’s modern club projects is a much richer cultural contrast than the names alone suggest.

20:00 — Beşiktaş v Marseille
Istanbul · TNT Sports / HBO Max · ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ 💬 🎬

The week’s great port-city fixture. Istanbul and Marseille bring migration, Mediterranean identities, neighbourhood, diaspora, colour and two of Europe’s most expressive supporter cultures into the same game. This is the strongest screening/event proposition of the week.

20:00 — Celtic v Ferencváros
Celtic Park · TNT Sports / HBO Max · ⭐⭐⭐⭐ 💬

Glasgow → Budapest and another European night at Celtic Park: ritual, travelling support and two clubs whose histories extend well beyond football results.

20:00 — Crystal Palace v Lech Poznań

South London meets one of Poland’s strongest supporter cultures. A particularly good Live Desk fixture because Selhurst and Poznań both make the crowd part of the visual language of the game.

20:00 — Real Sociedad v Bournemouth

Vinnie Jones in Wimbledon colours marking Paul Gascoigne during a football match.
Vinnie Jones and Paul Gascoigne in one of English football’s most notorious photographs. VAR might have required several camera angles.

Do not bury this underneath Europe. Wimbledon FC were one of English football’s great improbable stories: elected to the Football League in 1977, in the First Division by 1986 and FA Cup winners against Liverpool in 1988. The Crazy Gang included John Fashanu and Vinnie Jones — before Jones became a Hollywood actor and Bond villain. The famous photograph of Jones introducing himself rather intimately to Paul Gascoigne belongs to a version of English football for which VAR might require several camera angles and a very long conversation.

Justin Fashanu playing in Wimbledon’s blue kit during his time with the club.
Justin Fashanu in Wimbledon colours. His story sits alongside — and complicates — the mythology of the Crazy Gang era.

There is another, more complicated Wimbledon story in Justin Fashanu. John’s older brother also played for Wimbledon. Justin became the first prominent professional footballer in England to come out publicly as gay, and his story exposes a much harsher side of the macho football culture with which the Crazy Gang era is often remembered. Putting the brothers back into the same history makes Wimbledon’s cultural story considerably richer than nostalgia for hard tackles and famous photographs.

Then came the rupture. In 2002 an FA-appointed commission allowed Wimbledon FC’s owners to relocate the club from south-west London to Milton Keynes. Supporters rejected the idea that their club could simply be transported 50-plus miles away and formed AFC Wimbledon. The old club eventually moved north and became MK Dons. AFC Wimbledon began again at the bottom of the pyramid, with open trials on Wimbledon Common, and climbed through the divisions until the Wimbledon name returned to the Football League in 2011. They later returned home to a new Plough Lane.

So when AFC Wimbledon play MK Dons, the rivalry is not primarily about two neighbouring places or decades of competitive history. It is an argument about the meaning of a football club. Can a club be separated from its supporters and moved somewhere else? Or does the community left behind have a stronger claim to its identity?

Few fixtures answer the central World Club question so directly: who does a club belong to?

The World Club five

  1. Sunderland v AZ Alkmaar — 53 years between European nights; a football city gets Europe back.
  2. AFC Wimbledon v MK Dons — ownership, relocation, supporters and the meaning of belonging.
  3. Beşiktaş v Marseille — Istanbul and Marseille: ports, migration, diaspora and supporter culture.
  4. FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup R16 — free-to-watch global youth football, with the fight over its place in the calendar now part of the story.
  5. Crystal Palace v Lech Poznań — south London meets Poznań supporter culture.

WORLD CLUB / LIVE DESK

11–13 SEPTEMBER 2026

Live sport. Real places. True culture.

This weekend moves through Chile’s forests, Ibrox, Cromvoirt, Granada, Madrid, Queens, Budapest and beyond. Not everything that’s on. Just the sport worth watching for what it tells us about place, identity, culture and belonging.

WORLD CLUB FIVE

01 — WRC Rally Chile Biobío

Friday–Sunday · Concepción / Biobío · Rally.TV

This is exactly why rally belongs in the permanent Live Desk scan. Sixteen gravel stages move through forestry roads, fog, hills and fast flowing terrain around Concepción. The place is not scenery behind the sport; it determines the sport.

02 — Rangers v Celtic

Sunday 12:00 · Premier Sports Cup QF · Ibrox · Premier Sports

An Old Firm cup tie at Ibrox with no Celtic away supporters permitted. That absence becomes part of the story: what happens to a rivalry when one half of the support is deliberately missing?

03 — Solheim Cup

Friday–Sunday · Bernardus, Cromvoirt · Sky Sports Golf

Europe v USA in the first Solheim Cup staged in the Netherlands. Women’s elite team sport, national identity and a largely car-free spectator plan — with cycling and shuttles central to how people reach the course — make this unusually World Club-friendly.

04 — La Vuelta: Collado del Alguacil → Granada

Saturday / Sunday · TNT Sports / HBO Max

Watch Saturday for mountain geography and Sunday for the city. The penultimate stage climbs through Granada province before the race finishes in Granada itself the following day.

05 — Spanish Grand Prix, Madrid

Sunday 14:00 · Madring · Sky Sports F1

Not because Formula 1 automatically deserves the slot, but because this is a new sporting place being manufactured in real time: public roads, purpose-built sections and a new attempt to embed F1 into a European capital.

FRIDAY 11 SEPTEMBER

England U20 Women v Brazil U20

14:00 · FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup · FREE on DAZN / FIFA+

A youth scouting window and two major football cultures meeting in Poland before club narratives take over.

World Athletics Ultimate Championship — Day 1

18:00–21:00 · Budapest · FREE on BBC

A new compact format built almost entirely around semi-finals and finals. Budapest gets three concentrated nights of world-level athletics rather than a conventional long programme.

Stenhousemuir v Hearts

19:45 · Premier Sports Cup QF · Premier Sports

Ochilview hosts its first League Cup quarter-final in half a century: smaller ground, knockout football, major travelling support.

US Open — Men’s semi-finals

From 20:00 · Queens · Sky Sports Tennis / Sky Sports+

Final Friday night in Queens. Arthur Ashe under lights remains one of the most distinctive big-city sporting environments in the world.

SATURDAY 12 SEPTEMBER

La Vuelta — Stage 20

Approx. 11:30–16:15 · La Calahorra → Collado del Alguacil · TNT Sports / HBO Max

The cycling pick of the weekend: 186.8 kilometres and more than 5,000 metres of climbing. Granada province becomes the stadium.

West Ham Women v London City Lionesses

12:45 · WSL · Sky Sports Premier League

An intriguing London geography fixture: established East London club against the ambitious new WSL force built south-east of the centre.

Spanish Grand Prix — Qualifying

15:00 · Madring · Sky Sports F1

Formula 1’s first weekend on Madrid’s new city circuit: public roads, new infrastructure and a fresh piece of sporting geography.

World Athletics Ultimate — Day 2

17:00–20:00 · FREE on BBC

Three concentrated hours of major finals in Budapest.

Sunderland v Arsenal

20:00 · Premier League · TNT Sports / HBO Max

The Stadium of Light at night is the reason this rises above the other Premier League games. Arsenal arrive as champions; Sunderland supply one of England’s clearest football-city identities.

US Open — Women’s Final

21:00 · Sky Sports Tennis

A women’s major final under the lights at Arthur Ashe: New York as sporting stage.

SUNDAY 13 SEPTEMBER

Solheim Cup — Singles

09:00–17:00 · Sky Sports Golf

Twelve singles decide Europe v USA. If you only watch one Solheim session, this is the one.

Rangers v Celtic

12:00 · Premier Sports Cup QF · Ibrox, Glasgow · Premier Sports

An Old Firm cup tie at Ibrox with no Celtic away supporters permitted. That absence becomes part of the story: what happens to one of football’s most intense rivalries when one half of the support is missing?

Spanish Grand Prix — Madrid

14:00 · Madring, Madrid · Sky Sports F1

Formula 1’s first race on Madrid’s new city circuit: public roads, purpose-built infrastructure and a new sporting geography being created in real time.

Arsenal Women v Crystal Palace Women

14:45 · WSL · FREE on BBC Two / iPlayer

London WSL football at the Emirates and a proper terrestrial free-to-air window.

La Vuelta — Granada finale

Approx. 15:20–18:05 · Granada → Granada · TNT Sports / HBO Max

The race closes inside Granada rather than Madrid. A city and its surrounding landscape become the final frame of the Vuelta.

Manchester United v Manchester City

16:30 · Premier League · Sky Sports

Two global clubs competing over one city’s football identity.

World Athletics Ultimate — Final Night

17:00–20:00 · FREE on BBC

Budapest closes with a concentrated run of major track finals.

US Open — Men’s Final

19:00 · Sky Sports Tennis

The weekend closes at Arthur Ashe in Queens.
