WORLD CLUB / LIVE DESK

What to Watch This Weekend

WAFCON quarter-finals, Brasileirão, CONCACAF U20, Scottish football and the last stretch of pre-season.

7–9 August 2026 All times UK ⭐ World Club pick

The World Club Live Desk is our weekly guide to the sporting events worth paying attention to — not simply the biggest games, but the ones that tell us something about place, belonging, supporter culture and the way sport travels around the world.

This weekend takes us from Morocco to Mexico City, São Paulo to Rugby Park. WAFCON reaches the knockout stage, the CONCACAF U20 Championship reaches its final weekend, the Brasileirão gives us a strong Sunday-night double-header and European clubs complete their preparations for the new season.

Sunday 9 August

🤝 PRE-SEASON

12:00 — Manchester City v Atlético Madrid · 📺 CITY+

14:00 — Arsenal v Borussia Dortmund · 📺 Premier Sports

14:30 — Liverpool v Monaco · 📺 LFCTV / All Red Video

City–Atlético takes place at Seoul World Cup Stadium, giving it an extra World Club dimension: two European clubs temporarily occupying one of East Asia’s major football spaces for a global pre-season audience.

🏴 Kilmarnock v Celtic

13:30 · Scottish Premiership

📺 Sky Sports

Celtic’s early title defence heads to Rugby Park. The compact stadium, town identity and travelling Celtic support make this much more interesting to World Club than its league-table status alone suggests.

🏆 WAFCON QUARTER-FINAL

🇨🇲 Cameroon v Nigeria 🇳🇬

▶️ CAF TV on YouTube · 🆓

One of the great recurring fixtures of African women’s football: two giants of the continent meeting for a semi-final — and World Cup — place.

🇧🇷 Palmeiras v Internacional

20:00 · Brasileirão Série A

📺 Premier Sports 1

São Paulo v Porto Alegre. Two major Brazilian clubs carrying very different regional identities. Palmeiras offers us another route into São Paulo football culture; Internacional brings the history and football identity of Rio Grande do Sul into the same game.

World Club match of the weekend.

🏆 WAFCON QUARTER-FINAL

🇲🇼 Malawi v Ghana 🇬🇭

21:00

▶️ CAF TV on YouTube · 🆓

Perhaps the weekend’s best under-the-radar story, with Malawi’s debut tournament continuing into the knockouts.

🇧🇷 RB Bragantino v Corinthians

22:30 · Brasileirão Série A

📺 Premier Sports 1

An unusually revealing contrast: the contemporary global Red Bull football network against Corinthians, one of Brazil’s great mass-support institutions.

🌎 CONCACAF U20 FINAL

Final · Mexico City

00:00 Monday

▶️ Concacaf Watch / YouTube · 🆓

The tournament is about more than the regional trophy: all four semi-finalists have qualified for the 2027 U20 World Cup, while the champion also earns CONCACAF’s place at the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games — unless the already-qualified USA win, in which case the Olympic place passes to the runner-up.

WORLD CLUB PICKS

⭐ Five to prioritise

🇲🇦 Morocco v South Africa

Hosts, former champions and World Cup qualification.

🇨🇲 Cameroon v Nigeria

Two giants of African women’s football meeting in a knockout game.

🇧🇷 Palmeiras v Internacional

São Paulo meets Porto Alegre in the weekend’s strongest Brazilian fixture.

🌎 CONCACAF U20 semi-finals

🏴 Kilmarnock v Celtic

A reminder that the World Club story can be found just as easily at Rugby Park as in the biggest global stadiums.
